Principles of moving and turning clients

①   Before you lift or move a client, determine the causes and consequences of the client’s illness.

②   Evaluate the client’s weight and the extent he can move himself in order to decide how much person you need to move the client.

③   Before you begin, thoroughly explain the procedures you will be completing so that you obtain the client’s cooperation.

④   Positions in which clients are placed, methods of moving, and turning should all be based on the principles of maintaining the musculoskeletal system in proper alignment.

⑤   When moving a client you should lift him or her up from bed, in case of rubbing the skin off.

Turning position

Turning to side-lying position

Objectives

To provide increased comfort

To prevent complications. Such as press ulcer, joint contractures, pneumonia.

To facilitate treatment and nursing

Turning position with one nurse

Turning position with two nurses

Moving the client up in bed

Objectives

To provide comfort

To move the client up in bed who can’t move himself

Procedure

Moving up with one nurse

1~5 are the same as before.

① Coordinate the movements of all nurses.

② Nurses place weight on back foot and shift weight to front foot with the move, lifting client toward head of bed.

③ Place client in a comfortable position.

Transferring Client

Transferring Client From Bed To Gurney

Objectives

To transporting client who can’t move himself to receive some examinations or treatments, etc. 

Equipment

Gurney with sheet, pillow, quilt

Board on the gurney if the client is fracture

Procedure

Choosing methods according to the client’s illness and weight.

Transferring by himself

For the client who can cooperate with you

Transferring with one nurse

For the client who’s state of illness is not so bad and who’s weight is light

Transferring with two and three nurses

For the client who’s illness is worse than before and who is heavy.

Transferring with four nurses

This method is used to move client whose vertebras are broken or the state of illness is critical.

How to move the gurney

① Pay attention to the client’s state of illness in case anything happens.

② The speed you move the gurney should not be too quick.

③ When up or down a slope, the head of client should be at the upper position.

④ If there are big wheels and small wheels, the head of client should be put on the part of big wheels.

⑤ If there is a door, you should open the door first, and then pull the gurney in.
